I am my Karma Pt. 5: Power Failures
June 10, 2009 2 Comments
We have hit the hump day, Wednesday, and how many of us are already stressing about having too much on our plates? * holds both hands up in the air*
It seems as if our lives have become one big to-do list. You wake up at a set time, you have the get on the road or catch the bus at a set time every morning, our bills have to be paid monthly, and rent/mortgage is due by a certain date. I personally have problems with over planning, over booking and then when the time comes to execute, I’ve run out of steam and I end of cancelling or procrastinating.
I’m sure I’m not alone. Life, especially if you’re in school or on your 40hr/week hustle, becomes hectic. Many of us are so concerned with meeting deadlines that we’ve become robotic and listless in other areas.
It’s been a couple weeks since my last Karma injection. Amidst all the politicking, party and bullshit, we need to wooosaaa at times and regain power. We are not made of metal and computer chips, even our wireless companions have power failures, and as humans we are no different. Here are a few exercises taken from my bible number #2 – The Power of Karma (Mary T. Browne) that will help us avoid power failures:
- Don’t live each day as if it were on a deadline. This will shorten your life and make you ill tempered. Listen to your body; it will tell you in no uncertain terms if it is overloaded. Stress manifests itself through a wide range of physical symptoms, including digestive disorders, sleeplessness, nervous tremors, skin rashes and heart problems. This means use those vacation days, don’t be afraid to call in “sick” and play hooky, me time is essential.
- Prepare for the stressful times by relaxing when you can. This will give you the added juice you need to meet a particular deadline. Before that exam, job interview, or big presentation at work have a glass of wine, laugh, and kick back.
- Take a moment and ask yourself, “what is the use of driving myself to the breaking point?” you are not judged by your bank account or your title when you pass over to the other side, but only by how well you have served others. Service is the true measure of the quality of life. F*ck this report, it’s not going anywhere I’m going to my man’s house for some TLC.
- As k yourself at the end of each day “what did I do today to serve another?”My neighbour said she needed help with those heavy boxes, yet I’m here stressing over bills, I’m a go help her.
- Take 5 minutes every morning to mentally organize your day. Use this time focus on the needs of this particular day. Do not confuse what you need to do with what you want to do or wish you had time to do. I need to get my beauty sleep in to be able to get up early and prepare for work and write a post…instead of -I want to stay up and stress over my writer’s block while missing out on valuable hours of beauty sleep, which results in me getting up late, not writing a quality post. (Yes this something I am working on lawwd help me!)
Common sense? Learn something new? I hope so.
Hoping that I don’t short circuit,

Really useful information. As a society I think there is a lot more pressure on people. although it probably sounds like common sense… i think a lot of us have forgotton the importance of being at peace with ourselves and appreciate.
Hey Nic!
Gratitude is key! There is a lot more pressure on people…we have machines/technology doing a lot of the physical labor (cars, computers) but at the same time it has enabled us to fit more activities into our schedules…so we do lose sight of whats important..glad you’re feeling the post!!
