I Had to Start Somewhere

I was googling my name the other day ( something I encourage everyone to do) and came across a blog post about a letter I had written to Metro News back in 2006. There had been a major drug raid in the city and several arrests were made in lower income areas but a significant number of arrests were made in new sub divisions, outside of the city. The cover page was a black man in cuffs in the Jamestown area of the city, one of the lower income neighborhoods. …

What Not To Wear?

Remember the movie Cool Runnings? Remember how authentic those accents were? I love when American actors portray Caribbean people, it gives me flu symptoms. Regular. Flu. Symptoms. I also love how a group of creative young minds at The University of Toronto decided to pay homage this Halloween to one of their favorite childhood films, Cool Runnings by attending a party dressed as characters from the film. Their costumes were so fly, they walked away with a Costume of the night award. But the Black Student Association at U of …

SHC Wednesdays: Bigger Than Hip-Hop

“Hip hop has done more than any leader, politician or anyone to improve race relations.”
-Jay-z to Best Life Magazine (Full article here)
Those up on your Hova news have seen this quote before. I happened to come across it in an issue of Essence magazine from the summer but flipped passed it, shrugging. But the other day I remembered these words and had to do some digging. It may appear that race relations have improved as a result of an art form because you can talk hip-hop with cats from all …

My Dog Is Not a Racist, But the Dog On the 4th Floor?

I’d like to think I’ve heard and seen it all. Hermaphrodites. Ganguro girls. Washing your hands after you use a public bathroom, y’know- unusual occurrences.
But no, I had the most unusual and underlying racist conversation with a white lady in my building’s laundry room:

Lady: your dog is just great Tee, so well behaved and friendly
Tee: Why thank you
Lady: There is also the big dog on the 4th floor; he’s very friendly too. I was up there visiting and he was just a pleasure.
Tee: Wonderful [picks up laundry basket ready to …

I Want What She Has: Emulating the Image Of a Different Race

Hey everyone I am so wore out! In Toronto we just wrapped up Caribana, the annual parade and festival celebrating Caribbean culture. My hermit behind made sure to go out and enjoy the festivities; in addition here in the Province of Ontario we had a holiday yesterday, even though I somehow found myself at work. I won’t blog about Caribana much because well it’s something you definitely have to experience in person, but I will say this year was one of the best ever.
Through my travels this weekend I came …

You Don’t Trust My Chocolate Face!

I was stopped dead in my tracks when I came across a headline in yesterday’s Metro News, “Are White workers Preferred?” The free publication that for the most part is a waste of time and I will only read it while taking informal breaks out in my company’s warehouse facility away from the suffocating office air people. I prefer to read my news online or read a newspaper that is suited to my intellectual prowess; Metro dumbs it down and bores me. But I was interested to know, or reaffirm …

Last week I did a post on Lil Kim called the Pop Tart Hustle. Shortly after I posted I started to think long and hard about what I had written and then somehow my mind reverted back to Sara Baartman. I thought of Bionic Booty and then the Hottentot Venus bubble booty. I thought of Sara Baartman performing for white audiences to make a living and then I thought of Lil Kim on DWTS, and I didn’t see a fucking difference! I claimed to support the pop tart hustle of …

We Are Equal, But I’m Not Color Blind

I briefly mentioned in the “That’s why you don’t have a man” post that I was not ready to try cream in my coffee, although I find men of other races attractive. I am the bi-product of an interracial relationship, I support anyone in an interracial relationship, but I am weary of the way the world treats this special breed of love. Times are changing, this weekend I saw a white non-island woman do the Hot Wuk dance in a competition, and I cheered her on instead of wanting to …

Prince Harry is pretty fly for a white guy. He’s the more rebellious of the two princes, he’s got a fiery personality to go with that red head and if I were to choose one of the two princes to party with it would definitely be Harry. I came across an interesting article and video clip (see below) that I felt compelled to share.
Prince Harry has been called out on more than one occasion for his racist remarks and “inappropriate behaviour”. I have reiterated Prince Harry’s journey to controversy land …

Happy Friday!!!
A big thanks to everyone who has visited Goddess Intellect and left a comment this week, it means a lot to me J
A comment from my bi-racial post earlier this week inspired today’s post. Toodamncute mentioned that her cousin received hateful comments regarding bi-racial people from her co-workers. That instantly made me thinks of racism and its subtleties in the work environment. Why did I feel as if this was a great way to end the week? Not too sure, but please, scroll down, enjoy, and of course if …
