Pipe Dreams: Making it in the big city
I was chatting with the author of the blog Sunday Musings and she directed my attention to an article in the Toronto Star titled “Meet Toronto Girls with New York City Dreams”. She instantly thought of me and my ambitious ants in the pants self, as my addiction to New York is only increasing as the days pass-smh. For those who read my last post- Yes, Sunday Musings is aiding my addiction *winks*
I read the article hoping to get some inspiration, but my smile morphed into grinch lips as I read about the glamorous romantic city, dates with Giants’ quarterbacks, empty fridges, and Torontoesque rents. A few of the stories were something out of a Disney movie, girls gets education finds a job in big city and supports her family back home, but then the direction of the article started to take a turn to the point where some of these so-called ambitious Toronto/Canadian girls were made to look like Alice in Wonderland coming to a big city with pipe dreams and a trust fund.
Being a critically acclaimed racialist, I of course in my mind compared the caucasianesque-hollywood perception of and experience in New York City to a melanated person’s experience in the big apple.
Any transition to a big city or new location requires a plan. As much as I am infatuated with the exaggerated “au” of a New Yorker’s accent there is no way in hell I’m going anywhere expecting opportunities to arise with a trust fund and a smile. Please note: I do not have trust fund. Sucks to be me.
As I thought about the biased perception of New York City that is presented to the rest of the world I thought back to a post Nightfall did where he linked to a video called “Why We love New York” (click here for post). When I visit my ass goes straight to Brooklyn (holllla) and I have yet to be exposed to this Hollywood smoke screen image of the city. I grab a patty from Golden Krust and enjoy good conversation, it’s not that glamorous. But the culture is rich and the people are passionate, I think those are the prevalent seductive qualities the city has to offer, all other aspects are obliterated.
Life is fast as in all big cities and I am of the belief that with solid support of family/friends, a well thought out plan and clearing of cobwebs out of the brain one can make it anywhere.
Did you peep the article, what are your thoughts?
Did you find any similarities between the video on Nightfall’s blog and the article in the Toronto Star?
Do you have any pipe dreams that you are attempting to make a reality?
The food at Golden Krust is good too,

I think it’s great to have dreams, a man/woman without dreams might as well be dead. If you are in a position where you can attempt to achieve those dreams, then why not?! If it works out it works out, if it doesn’t at least you won’t have those “what if” moments.
